Generators vs. Power Stations: Which Backup Power Do You Need?

Updated October 2026 · 10 min read

For a short outage, a battery power station is quiet, safe indoors, and enough for phones, lights, and a CPAP. For outages that last days or weeks, you want a fuel generator. Many households end up with both.

Below we compare the generators and power stations on our list, explain how to size one, and cover the safety rules that prevent the most common storm deaths.

Generator or power station?

How to size a generator

  1. List what you need to run at the same time: refrigerator, lights, phone chargers, a fan or space heater, medical equipment.
  2. Check each appliance's label for its watts. Motors (refrigerators, well pumps, sump pumps) briefly draw several times their running watts when they start.
  3. Add up the running watts and make sure the largest starting surge fits under the generator's peak rating.
  4. Leave headroom. Generators run longer and quieter well below their maximum.
Why dual fuel matters: after a big storm, gas stations close or run dry. Propane stores for years without going stale, and a dual-fuel generator can run on either.

Safety: the rules that save lives

Carbon monoxide from generators kills people after nearly every major storm. The CDC's guidance is clear:

FAQ

What size generator do I need for a refrigerator?

Most home refrigerators run comfortably on a 2,000–2,500W inverter generator. Check your fridge's label, and remember the compressor's brief startup surge. For a fridge plus a freezer, lights, and more, look at 4,000W and up.

Can I run a generator in my garage with the door open?

No. Carbon monoxide builds up quickly in garages even with the door open. Run generators outside, at least 20 feet from the home, with exhaust pointed away.

Is a power station better than a generator?

For indoor use and short outages, yes: it's silent and makes no exhaust. For multi-day outages, a generator is better, because it can keep producing power as long as you have fuel.
